Bafut, Cameroon (November 9, 2023)
Iconic Artist, Taneulong from Bafut, has released his new single, Mabu’u, The song is a folk tale of the Bafut masquerade Mabu’u, gone missing. A powerful analogy of the elusive nature of peace which has been missing in the English speaking regions of Cameroon for over 7 years.
Taneulong criticizes war as a catalyst for “false conspiracy” and a “never-ending tit for tat.” He urges the people of Bafut to love one another and he believes that hatred only degrades a land and its people. This is a metaphoric folk composition that brings out the mind of an artist at its best.
Mabu’u showcases a melodic blend of traditional and modern musical elements. The official video features top hierarchy in Bafut (including HRH Fon Abumbi II, Paramount Fon of Bafut in one of his rare public appearances since 2017), coming together to emphasis the importance of a people’s culture and identity.
Quote from Taneulong:
“‘Mabu’u’ is a call for peace from a different perspective. It is a social
message, not a political message. I live in Bafut, and we have been
through a lot in recent years. Our cultural identity brings us together
and helps us overcome the current difficult times we are facing,
whether at home or in displaced communities far from home.”
Mabu’u can be streamed on Youtube, Spotify, Apple music, and other major streaming platforms.
